Pre-Med First STEP

PMFS Science Tutoring
Pre-Med 1st STEP aims to better prepare applicants for medical school by connecting students to physician mentors. Shadowing experiences are provided. However, these opportunities are at the sole discretion of the physician themselves on the condition that students meet certain professional standards (e.g. satisfactory grade point average per Pre-Med 1st STEP guidelines, an undertaking of certain course pre-requisites, HIPAA certification, demonstrated record of responsibility and career interest).

The Pre-Med First STEP (Science Training Enrichment Program) is an initiative that fosters support and encouragement for undergraduate students who seek to enroll at the University of Alabama School of Medicine (UASOM) by providing successful mentor-mentee pairings between doctors and current UAB students. In addition to forming meaningful relationships, the Pre-Med First STEP can assist with information and tips on topics such as: (1) Academic Guidance (course selection, study skills, post-undergraduate school planning); (2) Career Advice (resume critiques, interviewing tips, general career guidance); and (3) Personal Development & Social Enrichment (networking, hobbies, recreation, cultural/ethnic sensitivity).

All Pre-Med 1st STEP applicants must have:

  • A minimum 3.0 GPA
  • A demonstrated interest in pursuing a career in medicine
  • A copy of your resume
  • A copy of your school transcript
  • Signed Pre-Health/Med Advisor Recommendation (below)
  • Completed online application
