How to Submit Letters

Our school participates in the AMCAS Letters Service. Letter writers can submit letters through the AMCAS Letter Writer Application, Interfolio, mail and VirtualEvals. You must ensure ALL letters are submitted to AMCAS through one or more of the above mediums. Only letters submitted through this service will be included in your application for review by our admissions committee.

We offer three options for fulfilling our letters requirement portion of our secondary application. Letters from a Pre-Health Professional Advisory Committee (or other advisory entity), if available, is strongly preferred.

Type of Submissions – Choose One

If your school has a Pre-Health Professional Advisory Committee (or other advisory entity), a committee letter is strongly preferred (option one). Otherwise, you may submit either a packet of letters (option two) or three individual letters (option three).

  1. Committee Letter - Preferred Option
    A committee letter is a letter authored by a pre-health committee or pre-health advisor and intended to represent your institution's evaluation of you. A committee letter may or may not include additional letters written in support of your application. If you have committee letters from two different programs/schools, list one here and include the other as an individual letter. 
  2. Letter Packet
    A packet or set of letters is assembled and distributed by your institution, often by the institutions career center. A letter packet may include a cover sheet from your pre-health committee or advisor; however, in contrast to a committee letter, a letter packet does not include an evaluative letter from your pre-health committee or advisor.
  3. Three Individual Letters
    • At least one letter from a faculty member (preferably a science faculty member)
    • Two letters from other faculty or individuals who can provide in-depth evaluation and recommendation
            Note: Applicants should not submit more than five individual letters of recommendation. 

Personal Letters of Recommendation – Optional

In addition to choosing one of the letter options above, we strongly recommend, but do not require, you submit two additional personal letters of recommendation. These additional letters must also be sent to AMCAS through the AMCAS Letter Writer Application, Interfolio, mail or VirtualEvals.

If your letters are being sent by your undergraduate advising office, it is possible that office is using Interfolio or VirtualEvals. Once your letters are posted to Interfolio or VirtualEvals, they will be downloaded by AMCAS and made available to us. If you have a question about whether or not your advising office uses VirtualEvals or Interfolio, please contact your undergraduate advising office.

Tracking Your Letters

To check the receipt of letters after you have submitted your secondary application, visit the UABSOM admissions portal at Please allow 1-2 business days, after completing your secondary application, for letters to upload into the system.
