Interlibrary Loan: If an article you need does not have print or electronic access, the library staff will request an ILL for the materials at no cost to you. In most cases, the articles will be provided to your email within a few days.
Training/Instruction: At regular intervals, hands-on training will be provided on searching MEDLINE using PubMed, linking directly to full-text journal and book content, and on using evidence-based resources. Library staff will gladly work with you on formulating search strategies in order to find the best information available. For quick refreshers on using PubMed, ClinicalKey, the Cochrane Library or other online resources, please contact Alan Backer at firstname.lastname@example.org or Marion Montgomery at email@example.com.
Other Reference Assistance: Assistance in locating the highest quality medical websites for health care professionals, consumers and patients can be provided on request.
Journal Collection: About 85 clinical medical journals are available for in-house use, including a few titles not available through Lister Hill Library electronic access.
Reserve Book Collection: Includes major medical textbooks in the clinical specialties offered on campus, exam/review books, and other reference materials. Multiple copies of popular titles are available for each clerkship.
Audio-Digest CD Collection: Six titles: General Surgery, Family Practice, Internal Medicine, OB/GYN, Pediatrics and Psychiatry.
Computer Lab: Six workstations, including four heavily-secured networked computers for patient information access and two off-network computers for access to personal email and sites otherwise blocked due to security policy. There are two printers, one attached to the networked workstations and the other connected to the off-network workstations. One scanner is available at the workstation next to the printer. There is no charge for printing.
Photocopies: The copier is located in a separate copy room area. Copies made for education purposes are free of charge with the departmental code.
Book/CD Checkout: New students will fill out an information form. Once your account is entered into the system, you will be able to check out materials. The library has a "self-service" station near the front desk. The login will be your last name, first initial, last four digits of your social security number, followed by the letter "h" (for Huntsville). Example: taylorj7202h. There is a barcode scanner at the self-service station. Press the button, and pass it over the barcode label on the back cover of the book or CD. The Reserve Book Collection (those books with the yellow label on the spines) are reserved for check-out by Medical Students, Residents and Faculty only.
Checkout Policy: Students are allowed to keep books for 8 weeks. If the materials come due before the end of the clerkship, we generally allow them to be returned the day of the shelf exam. The week of the exam, the library will send students a statement that lists all materials checked out. We do not charge overdue penalties, although students may be charged for books that are lost or returned in extremely poor condition.
Food/Drink Policy: The library allows its patrons to bring snacks and drinks into the library, provided that all trash is disposed of and the library remains clean.
