Inpatient Clinical Training Sites:

University Hospital:

The main University Hospital on the UAB Medicine campus holds 1,157 beds and encompasses all of the services expected of a tertiary care academic center. UAB his home to growing programs within solid organ and stem cell transplantation, comprehensive cancer care, complex structural cardiology, and busy surgical services as well as status as a Level 1 trauma center. With a catchment area that spans the entire state as well as portions of neighboring states, patients come from great distances to seek the care provided by UAB Medicine. There are three ID teaching teams at University Hospital, two focused on general infectious diseases and a third service with a focus on immunocompromised (transplant, chemotherapy, rheumatologic conditions, and more) patients. Each team is comprised of 1 attending, 1 fellow, and rotating medical residents and students. Additionally two infectious diseases trained pharmacists and a PGY-2 ID pharmacy resident rotate with the teams to provide support and education.

Highlands Hospital:

Located just one mile from University Hospital, Highlands Hospital offers a slightly different ID experience with a focus on orthopedics and general medicine patients. Fellows have the opportunity to rotate during the second year with an increased focus on general infectious diseases in a more community hospital-like setting. The consult team here is structured differently with 1 attending and 1 nurse practitioner that the rotating fellow would join. 

Birmingham VA Medical Center:

Our VA Medical Center is situated within the physical footprint of the UAB Medicine campus and directly across the street from the academic ID offices. The BVAMC holds 313 beds and provides care for veterans living in the northern third of the state. The team is comprised of an attending, fellow, and an ID pharmacist.

Outpatient Clinical Training Sites:

Continuity Clinic is split between the 1917 HIV Clinic and the Highlands General ID Clinic over the course of two years. This occurs logistically by alternating weeks at each site to ensure the full breadth of ambulatory infectious diseases can be experienced and learned.

1917 HIV Clinic:

The 1917 clinic cares for approximately 4,000 patients living with HIV providing a range of medical services in addition to HIV care. The clinic is also home to viral hepatitis clinics, PrEP Clinic, office-based opioid treatment (OBOT) clinic, and several medical specialties that also host clinics on site to provide comprehensive care for our patients. Highlands General ID Clinic:

The Highlands General ID Clinic provides a site for community referrals for initial infectious diseases evaluation as well as outpatient follow-up for patients seen by the inpatient consult services. Similar to the HIV clinic experience, fellows here are paired with a single attending for the course of their time in fellowship.

Birmingham VA Infectious Diseases Clinic:

Fellows rotate through this clinic during their first year clinic months. The clinic cares for all variety of infectious diseases: HIV, general infectious diseases, and immunocompromised/transplant patients.
