Please join us for the Informatics Institute PowerTalk Seminar Series-Clinical Informatics with Daniel Silva, Ph.D., Assistant Professor, Department of Industrial and Systems Engineering, College of Engineering, Auburn University. The seminar is titled "Using Industrial Engineering and Lean Techniques to Mitigate Burnout in Care Teams."

Abstract: Burnout among physicians and nursing staff has been a growing concern in the healthcare industry. Administra-tors at UAB Hospital have pointed out that they believe, based on anecdotal evidence, that a key contributing factor to burnout are the processes associated with Electronic Health Records (EHR). This talk will focus on planned research, which aims to assess the level of burnout experienced by clinicians and nurses at the Kirklin Clinic of UAB, determine what factors affect burnout, test the hypothesis that the EHR process is a major con-tributing factor to burnout, and then apply techniques from lean engineering to streamline, simplify and error-proof that process. During the talk we will present findings from a preliminary fact-finding project, conducted by graduate students, to determine the current state of burnout and wellness measurements at UAB Hospital. We will also discuss some background on the connections between burnout and EHR. And finally we will present the design of our planned study.
