“The Collaboration Structures of Critical Care Teams and Patient Outcomes: A Retrospective Network Analysis”

You Chen, Ph.D.
Assistant Professor, Department of Biomedical Informatics
Vanderbilt University Medical Center
OHPEN Laboratory

Abstract: Intensive care units (ICUs) represent highly complex medical environments, using sophisticated technology and caring for a vulnerable patient population. Patients in ICUs are managed by multidisciplinary teams. It is widely recognized that team and organizational factors are associated with medical error, length of stay, and mortality risk. However, teamwork that is executed in clinical practice has not been well measured or quantified, and thus healthcare organizations have limited evidence to optimize teamwork. In this talk, Dr. Chen will present a retrospective network analysis approach to measure critical care teams' collaboration structures and quantify their relationships with patient outcomes. He will show network analysis in neonatal, trauma, and COVID-19 ICUs.
