There are many challenges to developing data warehouses for health services research. A common obstacle is that raw datasets must undergo data preparation and integration comprising the extract, transform, and load (ETL) processes, which requires technical proficiency that many researchers lack. The University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB) maintains a research data warehouse (RDW) that serves as a resource for faculty and student health services researchers and includes such datasets as CMS Hospital Compare, Medicare Cost Reports, and HRSA Area Health Resources Files. Due to challenges with ETL automation, the RDW does not include American Hospital Association (AHA) Annual Survey data. To address this barrier, we developed a semi-automated process to incorporate AHA Annual Survey data and its yearly updates to the RDW. This seminar will present the protocol design of data set incorporation including the process of using the incorporated data to design a multidimensional model and create data visualizations based on a hypothesis-generating research question.
