Program Overview

The UAB International Medical Education Research Program allows international graduates to experience collaborative learning and exceptional mentoring and training from within one of the university-wide research centers, UAB hospitals and clinics or field sites.

Scholars may participate for up to 8 weeks, 2 research training periods, in research activities directly alongside UAB’s top faculty and in the most promising research.


Must be an International Graduate, MD or PhD in a health related field.

You must take one of the following TOEFL Tests passing with the following minimum scores:

  • iBT (internet-based) score of 100 with a minimum of 22 on the speaking section
  • Paper-based test score of 600

TOEFL is waived only if English is your first language, or if your medical school or university teaches all classes and rotations in English. A document from your medical school or university administration must be uploaded stating English is the first language used. Good command of the English language will also be determined during the virtual online interview via Zoom

International scholars who wish to apply for the UAB International Education Research program must complete the online application.


Make sure you upload

  • Curriculum vitae/resume
  • Copy of your medical or graduate level diploma
  • Highest level education transcripts in English
  • Photo (only jpgs less than 250KB)
  • Copy of the biographical information page of your passport
  • Proof of proficiency in English (listening, speaking, reading and writing)
  • Letter stating your purpose and reason of interest in the research project that you have chosen

Process & Deadline

  1. Completed applications should be received 6 months before the start of the training.
  2. After completing the online application, you will be contacted by our office to schedule a virtual online interview via Zoom.
  3. You will be notified of acceptance or rejection in a timely manner by email. Please be sure to include the correct email address.
  4. Upon acceptance, you will receive instructions on how to pay the research program fees and gain compliance to train.


The application fee of $100 is non-refundable.
Cost per 4-week training period is $3,000. This includes research administrative cost and transport to and from the Birmingham airport on the date of arrival and back to the airport from a local Birmingham address at departure. This application fee is due upon completion of your application and the research program fee after successfully completing your virtual online interview via Zoom.

Applicant will be responsible for securing and paying for housing, local transportation to and from training location and meals.

Payment can be made by a major credit card or wire transfer.

Important Note for Applicants

Selections are made on the basis of the applicant’s outstanding quality and relevance to the prospective research opening. Due to the highly competitive application process, there is no guarantee that the research project that you have chosen will be available the dates you have requested. 

Your training will only be guaranteed after we receive your payment in full for your research program fees.
