PRIME is an NIH-funded training grant predoctoral fellowships are available for research training in the areas of basic, clinical, translational, and epidemiological investigation in Kidney, Urology, and non-malignant Hematology. Trainees will pursue up to two- years of an independent research in the laboratory of an established research scientist, under direction of the graduate theme and faculty mentor.
SUPPORT includes stipend that follows the NRSA levels, health insurance, partial tuition and fees, $1000 in travel funds

Application
Selection of trainees is based on the demonstrated ability of the candidate and his/her career choice and potential for an academic career.
Applicants must be United States citizens or permanent residents and have received a baccalaureate degree by the beginning date of their NRSA appointment as well as being enrolled in a research PhD program at UAB.
Current areas of research interest include: renal transport physiology, acute and chronic kidney disease, diabetic kidney disease, cell and developmental biology pertaining to the kidney, polycystic kidney disease, hypertension, glomerular diseases, dialysis-related vascular access, lower urinary tract disease, inflammation and immunology, red cell pathology, nephrolithiasis, genetic diseases, hypertension, sickle-cell disease, basic and clinical research in transplantation and outcomes/epidemiology research.

Qualified applicants will be asked to participate in a chalk talk -
The chalk talk details are provided prior to the scheduled date of the talk and will be consistent for each applicant with a time for talk and time for question and answer.
Selection Criteria
Student selection is based on the application in three parts as well as the chalk talk. The criteria, along with the application are provided to the selection committee prior to the chalk talk for evaluation. The scores from the below rubric are then tallied and a ranking of candidates is provided.
The selection committee consists* of the two directors of PRIME T32, members of the UAB kidney community, as well as the executive committee for PRIME.
*To remove bias, no mentors of students who are applying for PRIME will be allowed to participate in any aspect of selection, even if they are directors or committee members.
