In 1954, James Garber Galbraith, M.D., established the Division of Neurosurgery within the Department of Surgery in the UAB School of Medicine, creating a culture of growth and compassionate care that is still present within the now-Department of Neurosurgery at UAB. In honor of Galbraith's achievements and contributions, the UAB Department of Neurosurgery is proud to present the 38th Annual J. Garber Galbraith, M.D., Scientific Session and Lecture on November 12, 2021.

The Galbraith Lecture is given annually by a guest neurosurgeon who has made significant contributions to the field of neurosurgery at large, while the Galbraith Scientific Session features the research and achievements of both past and present UAB neurosurgery residents. The lecture and scientific session also culminate in a dinner held each year for UAB Department of Neurosurgery faculty, residents and guests.

Beverly Walters HeadshotGalbraith Lecturer

Beverly C. Walters, MD, MSc, FRCSC
Adjunct Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Director of Clinical Research

Walters has served as an adjunct professor at UAB as Director of Clinical Research where she has trained neurosurgical residents in evidence based medicine and academic research best practices since 2009.

After retirement from a full-time clinical practice in general neurosurgery, Walters turned her focus to pursue her interest in applied evidence-based medicine. Her experience in clinical research involves the design and implementation of randomized controlled trials, case-control studies, and meta-analyses, and she has written extensively on study design and assessment of the quality of medical literature, including being the author/co-author of many monographs on critical appraisal, editorials and book chapters on neurosurgical research. She has extensive experience in survey methodology and has been a lecturer, tutor, and course designer for several educational programs on critical appraisal of the medical literature for practicing clinicians, graduate students, postgraduate trainees, and medical students. She is the co-editor of the neurosurgical textbook, Evidence-based Neurosurgery. Most recently, Dr. Walters was awarded the Congress of Neurological Surgeons Founders Laurel Award, the first female to receive this honor.
