Centor named board chair of national doctors' group

Centor, M.D., is the 2014-2015 Chair of the Board of Regents of the American College of Physicians, the nation’s largest medical specialty organization. Centor’s term begins at the conclusion of Internal Medicine 2014, ACP’s annual scientific meeting in Orlando, Fla., April 10-12. The Board of Regents is the main policy-making body of the ACP.

“Becoming the Chair of the ACP Board of Regents is a great honor,” Centor says. “For internists, the ACP is our major organization that focuses on education, improving patient care and advocacy. “

Centor has been a member of ACP since 1978, a Fellow of ACP since 1985, and a member of ACP’s Board of Regents since 2008. He has served on many of ACP’s committees, including the Membership Committee, Finance Committee, Strategic Planning Committee and the Health and Public Policy Committee, which he chaired from 2009-2011. He was awarded the Laureate Award for outstanding service to medicine and ACP from the Alabama Chapter of ACP in 2009.

He is currently professor of Medicine and Regional Dean of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, Huntsville Regional Medical Campus. Previously, he held numerous positions at the Medical College of Virginia, where he earned his medical degree and also completed his residency. 

He is a reviewer for several medical journals and has extensive publication credits to his name. Areas of special interest for Centor include the diagnosis and treatment of adult pharyngitis and the clinical diagnostic process.
