UAB restricts travel to countries with Ebola outbreaks, implements new procedures

Written by
travelUAB continues to monitor the outbreak of the Ebola virus in West Africa. Although the risk of this disease affecting our campus remains very low, the university will remain vigilant to protect the well-being of its students, faculty, staff and visitors. For those reasons, new procedures have been implemented affecting travel to and from the affected areas — currently identified as Sierra Leone, Guinea or Liberia by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

  • All university-related travel to the affected countries is postponed until further notice. Any exceptions for travel to these countries must be approved in advance by President Ray Watts, M.D.
  • Those who plan to travel to affected countries for non-university related activities should notify campus officialsprior to their departure. Upon return, they may be subject to new procedures, including screening, quarantine and clearance by officials before they are allowed to return to campus for work or study. Find the appropriate campus official to contact in the new procedures.
  • UAB will continue to seek to identify faculty, staff students and visitors who have traveled from the affected countries within the past 21 days, and they will be required to participate in a risk assessment to determine the level of exposure. Visitors or invited guests who plan to visit the campus should allow additional travel time to comply with the screening procedures. All are required to comply with the new procedures before appearing on campus for work or classes.
UAB will continue to monitor the developments and update faculty, staff, students and visitors with any new recommendations.
