Little Red Dress Party to benefit local AHA

Written by
The third annual Little Red Dress Party, a night of music, dancing, food and prizes to support the American Heart Association and its annual Go Red for Women campaign, will take place Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013, from 8 p.m. to midnight at the Southern Museum of Flight, 4343 73rd St. North in Birmingham.

The event will be hosted by the UAB School of Medicine’s chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association and proceeds will directly benefit the Birmingham chapter of the American Heart Association, said Jackie Parks, a second-year medical student and president of the UAB AMWA chapter.

“The Go Red for Women campaign really pushes women to understand that heart disease is the No. 1 killer of women today, and just gets women to be heart healthy,” Parks said. “We thought the Little Red Dress party was also a great way to support our local community.”

Swing band Ain’t Misbehavin’ will perform for the first hours of the party, followed by DJ Joffre Johnson, a UAB medical student who will entertain partygoers for the remainder of the evening.  Parks said light hors d’oeuvres will be served and there will be a cash bar. She said AMWA is also partnering with local businesses for a silent auction and prizes that can be won throughout the night.

Tickets are $15 for UAB students and $20 for the general public. Parks encourages professionals of all ages to come enjoy the evening.

“Because the proceeds are going to the Birmingham chapter of the AHA, the Little Red Dress Party is a way to give back to our community and have a fun night out,” she said.  “It’s Valentine’s Day weekend, so you can go out with your significant other on Friday and spend Saturday having fun with friends.”

AMWA is a multispecialty organization of physicians, residents, medical students and health care professionals dedicated to advancing women’s roles in medicine and improving women’s health. The UAB School of Medicine Chapter, one of several student organizations available to students, currently has about 50 members.
