The American Academy of Pediatrics, in collaboration with UAB, is offering two Helping Babies Survive (HBS) courses February 23-26 at the UAB Women and Infant’s Center.
These courses are ideal for medical, nursing or public health professionals interested in gaining global experience and making a difference in the lives of newborns around the world. The courses will be led by Waldemar Carlo, M.D., the Edwin M. Dixon Endowed Professor of Pediatrics and director of the Division of Neonatology.

• Helping Babies Breathe (HBB), begins at noon, Feb. 23 and ends at 5 p.m., Tuesday, Feb. 24.
• Essential Care for Every Baby (ECEB), begins at 8 a.m., Feb. 25 and ends  3 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 26
• Combined Helping Babies Breathe and Essential Care for Every Baby (HBB + ECEB), begins at  noon Feb. 23 and ends 3 p.m., Feb. 26.

The HBS suite of training programs focuses on evidence-based curricula to improve neonatal health and to reduce mortality in resource-limited countries of the world. HBS programs began with the popular and successful neonatal resuscitation training program, Helping Babies Breathe (HBB). Building on the simple, yet effective, HBB curriculum has expanded to include essential newborn care in Essential Care for Every Baby (ECEB).

Essential Care for Every Baby (ECEB), much like HBB, utilizes a simple and effective approach to training to reduce neonatal mortality. Focusing on the period from birth to discharge from the birth facility, the ECEB curriculum emphasizes the assessment and monitoring of babies to promote thermal regulation, breastfeeding, and disease prevention.
