Biggio named inaugural holder of Hauth professorship

joseph biggioJoseph Ramon Biggio Jr., M.D., has been named the inaugural holder of the John C. Hauth Endowed Professorship in Maternal-Fetal Medicine in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology in UAB’s School of Medicine. The appointment was approved by the UA System Board of Trustees during its June 17 meeting.

Creation of the endowed position was approved by trustees in November 2015 to honor emeritus professor John Hauth, M.D., who directed the Division of Maternal-Fetal Medicine for more than 10 years.

Dr. Biggio is widely regarded as a talented and compassionate physician/scientist and teacher who epitomizes those qualities considered ideal in academic medicine. He directs the Division of Maternal- Fetal Medicine, the Obstetrics and Gynecology Research and Diagnostic Laboratory and is vice chair for quality and research in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

He is certified in obstetrics and gynecology and maternal-fetal medicine by the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology, and he is certified in clinical genetics by the American Board of Medical Genetics.

Biggio is a member of numerous professional organizations, including the Society for Maternal Fetal Medicine, American College of Medical Genetics, American Institute of Ultrasound in Medicine, American Medical Association and International Society of Prenatal Diagnosis, and he is a fellow of the American Congress of Obstetricians and Gynecologists.

Biggio, an alumni of the School of Medicine, completed residencies in obstetrics and gynecology and clinical genetics at UAB in addition to a fellowship in maternal-fetal medicine before joining the faculty in 2003.
