The Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME) accredits residency and fellowship programs and will be on site October 30-November 1. The team will consist of 5 MDs. The review will focus on the clinical setting in which the residents/fellows train to ensure the setting promotes quality care and prepares residents to be safe health practitioners. It is referred to as the CLER visit (Clinical Learning Environment Review).
During the visit, the CLER team members will be visiting most of the nursing units, clinical areas and ORs in the hospital, and they will be accompanied by a UAB resident/fellow at all times. The CLER team members will be wearing an ACGME ID badges (and not a UAB Hospital badge).
The CLER site visit is not an accreditation site visit but is still an important visit for the institution where the ACGME CLER site visitors meet with hospital and GME leadership, program directors, core faculty and residents/fellows as well as walking around all clinical areas to visit with nurses and other staff while assessing the clinical setting in which training occurs. The 6 CLER focus areas are patient safety, quality, wellbeing, supervision, transitions of care and professionalism. There is also a new Operative and Procedural (OP) CLER sub-protocol visit, and UAB is only the 5th institution in the U.S. to participate in that component.
