On Sunday, Feb. 3, James (Jim) Herron Halsey Jr., M.D., peacefully passed in Birmingham at age 85. He received his medical degree from Yale School of Medicine and trained in neurology at North Carolina Hospital in Chapel Hill. His training was interrupted by service in the U.S. Air Force Medical Corps from 1961-1963, where he held the rank of Captain. He joined UAB as an instructor in 1965 and was appointed director of the Division of Neurology in 1972. Two years later, he was named chair of the newly established Department of Neurology and held that position until 1985. In 1992, he relocated to Columbia University and served as an attending physician at New York-Presbyterian. In 2001, he returned to UAB and resumed his clinical practice in stroke, headache and general neurology. Halsey published more than 80 peer-reviewed articles in his fields. He served as a teacher, mentor and colleague for generations of medical students, residents and other trainees. He also provided outstanding and compassionate care to a vast number of patients over the years.
