Dean's Excellence Award winner profile: Michael Barnett, M.D., MS, FAAP, FAAHPM

Michael Barnett, M.D., MS, FAAP, FAAHPM, associate professor of Medicine and Pediatrics, is one of two junior faculty winners for the Dean's Excellence Award in Teaching.

Barnett received his medical degree from the University of Kentucky Medical School. He completed a residency in combined Internal Medicine & Pediatrics and a fellowship in Palliative Care for both children and adults at UAB. He now attends on the palliative care services at UAB and Children’s of Alabama. Barnett is the Director of the UAB Palliative Medicine Fellowship Program and is the Core Leader for Education for the UAB Division of Gerontology, Geriatrics & Palliative Care. He has been a faculty consultant in communication skills for the United States Medical Licensing Clinical Skills exam. He is a senior faculty facilitator for the national VITALtalk communication skills program, and he has started an Advanced Community Training program at UAB. Barnett has presented at the national meetings of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine, the National Black Nurses Association, and at the Veterans Affairs National Center for Ethics in Health Care. He is board-certified in Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Hospice & Palliative Medicine and is a fellow of the American Academy of Hospice & Palliative Medicine, the American College of Physicians, and the American Academy of Pediatrics.
