Rebekah Weil, M.D., assistant professor in the Division of General Internal Medicine and director of the Internal Medicine Residency Health Disparities Track, is the junior faculty winner of the 2021 Dean’s Excellence Award in Teaching.
Trainees who are lucky enough to work with Weil consistently praise her teaching skills and recognize her as an exceptional role model for providing caring and competent patient care. She commits herself to high-quality, trainee-focused education daily, with a clear emphasis on formative development. She has also developed a needed and incredibly popular educational offerings for our residents which serve as a model for other programs across the country.
Weil’s passion for underserved patients is inspiring and has allowed her learners to gain important insight into the care of marginalized populations. Nowhere is this more evident than her development of the Health Disparities Track for the Internal Medicine Residency Program. While a resident herself, Weil saw a need to expand our curriculum in health disparities and took on the development of a specialized track as a key legacy of her chief year. The training has now expanded to include didactic and clinical experiences, several sub-tracks for residents interested in advocacy or global health, and a wildly popular elective month. Nearly half of eligible residents participate in this highly regarded track.
Weil trained at UAB for medical school and residency, was selected as a chief medical resident, and then completed a general internal medicine fellowship at Oregon Health Sciences University with a concentration on Medical Education. She joined the faculty at UAB in 2018.
