Dance group 1Medical students used their humor, acting abilities and creative prowess to entertain a packed theatre during the 2013 Best Medicine Show and raised more than $13,000 to help ensure Equal Access Birmingham’s future in providing health care.

The Best Medicine Show, an annual opportunity for students to use their ideas poking fun at medical student life, featured 26 performances, including video skits, live music and dance. Omar Ahmed, a second-year medical student and producer of this year’s Best Medicine Show, said the production gives students the ability to show off behind-the-scenes talents they don’t often get to share.

“I think it was amazing,” Ahmed said. "All of our emcees, live acts and performers were incredible. I consider the show an amazing success.”

Hosted by the Student Senate and held at the historic Alabama Theatre, the show raised $13,563.48 for Equal Access Birmingham, a student-run community service initiative that operates two clinics to provide primary care for underserved people in the Birmingham area. EAB Vice President Lizzy Varnell, a second-year medical student, said the funds from this year’s show will be used to create an endowment that will make EAB a financially sustainable organization, allowing students to provide healthcare for the greater Birmingham community for years to come.

Ahmed thanked students, medical school administrators and UAB President Ray L. Watts, M.D., for their support in making the show successful.
