The year was 1997. Department of Medicine Communications Director Carolyn Walsh was traveling on i459 when things did not feel quite right. She was fighting to stay awake at the wheel, noticing bouts of drowsiness on and off. Before she could pull over, Walsh was in a car accident.

Elizabeth Beierle, M.D., professor in the Department of Surgery, has been awarded the 2022 Dean’s Excellence Award in Mentorship. 

In each installment of the Heersink School of Medicine Office for Diversity and Inclusion’s Women’s History Month series, there is a focus on featuring women who are making history by providing healing and hope. This week, the office—in partnership with the department of surgery—recognizes Director of the Division of Transplantation and Arnold G. Diethelm Endowed Chair in Transplantation Surgery Jayme Locke, M.D., MPH.
Each student had their own suturing kit in front of them, equipped with a human skin model pad and suturing tools.
Daniel Chu, M.D., MSPH, FACS, FASCRS, will help plan and lead the strategic growth of health services research activity across the department as well as research improvement initiatives.

The McWane Surgical Systems program–first piloted in September with Chu at the helm– introduces middle and high-school aged students to the medical field, and surgery, in particular. And, it serves the Birmingham City School population of students– 99 percent of these students are considered in to be an underrepresented minority, with a majority of these students being Black.
