Mini iPads for Incoming Students

As part of a joint effort among the School of Medicine, UAB Central IT, Health System Information Systems, and Apple Corporation, you will be issued an iPad Mini to use in the course of your medical education. You can expect to receive your iPad Mini during orientation the week of July 24, 2017.

The specific hardware you will receive is an iPad Mini 4th Generation, Wi-Fi Only, with 32GB memory and 3 years of AppleCare+. In addition to the iPad, you will be issued a Bluetooth Keyboard/Case. The iPad Mini will be used to deliver educational content through apps and links to web-based resources, be used in the classroom for interactive learning, and provide a secure computing environment for HIPAA compliant electronic communications and accessing electronic medical records.

The iPad Mini will be managed by UAB Health System’s mobile device management system which allows UAB to maintain data security, even if the iPad is lost, damaged beyond use, or stolen. Enrollment in the mobile device management system will be automatic during the initial guided setup of the iPad Mini.

As part of your AY 17-18 tuition and fees, you will be assessed a Secured Communication Fee of $521.

What does this mean for you:

  1. You will be issued an iPad Mini at the start of orientation week.
  2. You will be assessed a $521 secured communication fee in AY17-18.
