Women in Medicine Month, observed throughout September, serves as a timely reminder of the invaluable contributions that women physicians, biomedical scientists, educators, and health care professionals have made to the field of medicine.

Heersink faculty and staff gathered in different spots around Birmingham to welcome the incoming class of medical students with celebrations.

Dr. and Mrs. Marnix E. Heersink have been announced as the William M. and Virginia B. Spencer Outstanding Philanthropists at this November’s National Philanthropy Day ceremony.

Many of you may be considering how to best spend your time this summer. To provide some insight, our student co-contributors asked some of their fellow classmates how they spent, or how they wish they had spent, their summer before medical school.

As their first year of medical school comes to an end, our student co-contributors reached out to a few of their fellow MS1s to chat about what this year has meant to them, what they’ve enjoyed the most, and how it has lived up to, or differed from, their expectations.

Deciding where to live is an important factor to consider before beginning your journey as a medical student–but it doesn’t have to be challenging!

Dr. Boni Elewski, professor and chair of UAB Heersink School of Medicine Department of Dermatology, was awarded the 2023 Outstanding Educator in Psoriatic Disease Award by the National Psoriasis Foundation and the Medical Professionals Awards Committee.
At the UAB Heersink School of Medicine, we are committed to creating an inclusive environment that values the diversity of experiences, backgrounds, and interests that our students bring to our school each year. As newly admitted students navigating their way into medical school, the most beneficial information you can receive will often come from those who have most recently been in your shoes. Therefore, every year we recruit first-year medical students to serve as our Vital Signs Contributors, helping us to provide student insight. We are thrilled to introduce to you this cycle’s Vital Signs Co-Contributors: Erica, Jenna, and Nicholas!
