Simpson web articleProfessor and UAB Voice Center Co-Director C. Blake Simpson, M.D., published his research "Treatment of chronic neurogenic cough with in-office superior laryngeal nerve block" in The Laryngoscope in April 2018.

According to the article, "Neurogenic cough is believed to result from a sensory neuropathy involving the internal branch of the superior laryngeal nerve (SLN)." Methods and outcomes for the treatment of neurogenic cough with localized blockade of the internal branch of the SLN are detailed in the paper.

Simpson was listed as a first author.

"It's a technique I came up with for chronic cough," said Simpson. "We were the first to do it as far as we know and the first to publish on the technique, which has caught fire and is performed all over the world. It's one of the most gratifying things of my career."

Among work published in The Laryngoscope between January 2018 and December 2019, Simpson's research received some of the most downloads in the 12 months following online publication, reaching the top 10% most downloaded papers in recent publication history.

The Laryngoscope was founded in 1896 and is the leading source of information on advances in the diagnosis and treatment of head and neck disorders.
