The Division of Forensic Pathology provides forensic pathology services to Jefferson County, Alabama (Birmingham and surrounding region) in a medical examiner system. The pathologists perform approximately 650 postmortem examinations annually through the Jefferson County Coroner/Medical Examiner Office, including approximately 120 homicides and 240 accidents. The pathologists provide consultation on these cases to the families of the decedents, and to police and attorneys when appropriate. The pathologists testify approximately 40 times per year in criminal and civil trials related to the deaths investigated by the office. The division has its own investigative staff, autopsy assistants, clerical staff, and toxicology services.
The three pathologists in the division are all Diplomates of the American Board of Pathology in forensic pathology. The division is one of a handful of forensic pathology divisions fully incorporated into the Department of Pathology in an academic medical center, and the division offers a one-year fellowship in forensic pathology.
