essential modules in cultural inclusion

Introducing A Toolkit for a Healthy Environment

You're invited to explore the concept of inclusivity within our schools, and the part you play in its advancement. Each of the four modules are designed to challenge, engage, and stimulate self-inquiry. And by doing so, it will afford faculty, staff, trainees, and students alike the promise of self-awareness and, with it, the gift of self-enrichment.

module A

building belonging

We all appreciate the value of a diverse campus. But diversity alone isn’t enough. Genuine inclusive spaces are the result of conscious intent on the part of each and every one of us. This module looks at ways we can all better foster a climate of inclusiveness and, in particular, avoid situations and actions that unconsciously exclude others.

module B

understanding bias

We all carry biases. Some we’re aware of – such as an aversion to large crowds or a love of Gouda cheese. Many more biases, however, operate just below the surface of our awareness. There they lie, impacting the way we approach the world and make decisions without our even recognizing their influence. Sometimes unconscious biases are helpful. Sometimes they create problems.

module C

cultural competency

From country of origin to socioeconomic status, culture is as varied as each and every individual. This module explains how increasing our cultural competence in patient interactions results in greater satisfaction with the delivery of care, better adherence to treatments and improved health outcomes. Cultural competence is a critical skill for healthcare providers who deal daily with diverse people in life-and-death situations.

module D

conflict resolution

Conflict is a natural part of daily life—especially among people who see the world differently, based on their ideas, expectations, culture, beliefs and backgrounds. When conflict occurs, it can lead to distrust, weakened communication, fractured collaboration, higher turnover and poor performance. However, not all conflict is negative. This module explores conflict and how we can approach it with thoughtfulness and respect for all.
