Dr. Jeffrey Lebensburger of the UAB Division of Pediatric Hematology-Oncology at Children’s Hospital was recently selected as one of twenty national participants in the American Society of Hematology, Clinical Research Training Institute (CRTI).

The CRTI is a unique year-long education and mentoring program for hematology, hematology/oncology, and hematology-related fellows-in-training, as well as junior faculty physicians at academic medical centers in the United States, Canada and Europe. The goal of ASH’s Clinical Research Training Institute is to prepare hematologists for careers in patient-oriented clinical research.

Dr. Lebensburger’s project entitled: “A Feasibility Trial Using Hydroxyurea for Secondary Prevention of Silent Cerebral Infarcts in Children with Sickle Cell Disease”, seeks to identify strategies to reduce the negative impacts  of sickle cell disease on brain function in children.
