Social Work traineeships are available at the UAB PPC for students from the MSW programs at The University of Alabama and Alabama A&M University (see below for school-specific information). Social Work Trainees are eligible to receive tuition assistance for the academic year, as well as a monthly stipend. Students are typically in the traineeship for 10 months, August through May*. Traineeships for students from other universities or for non-credit status are also a possibility and can be discussed on a case-by-case basis.
The Traineeship is designed to meet the MSW field placement requirements as outlined by each school and the Council of Social Work Education (CSWE). In addition to the core activities carried out by all trainees, PPC Social Work trainees develop expertise in carrying out psychosocial assessments, performing brief interventions, making community referrals, and discharge planning activities. Former PPC Social Work trainees have been employed in public health, schools, child protective services, early intervention, and as medical social workers in multiple pediatric settings.
*Because the PPC Social Work Trainee receives a full stipend for the month of May, trainees are required to remain with the PPC past graduation in order to complete a team project which takes place at the end of May.
The PPC Traineeship follows the UAB academic calendar. Students are expected to enroll in SW559, “Pediatric Pulmonary Care: An Interdisciplinary Approach,” which is a 3 credit-hour elective listed at UA. This course counts as am elective in the MSW program. During (UAB) fall semester the student spends approximately 10-12 hours per week at the PPC. Approximately half this time is devoted to interdisciplinary didactic class work projects, presentations, and seminars, with the other half an introduction to the role of the medical social worker in pediatrics. The student will receive a letter grade for SW559. In (UAB) spring semester, the student is enrolled in SW595, Field Education II, and spends 32 hours per week at the PPC. Interdisciplinary classes continue in spring, along with clinical work, projects, and presentations.
MSW/MPH program students are also welcome to apply for a PPC Social Work Traineeship. These dual-degree students should discuss the traineeship in detail with the PPC Social Work Faculty as issues with scheduling conflicts, ability to receive elective credit, and time counted for MPH internship may be encountered.
Alabama A&M University: The PPC Social Work Traineeship is open to second-year MSW students who are enrolled in the Direct Practice concentrations of Family & Child Welfare or Community Mental Health. Students who begin Advanced Standing in summer are welcome to apply, along with students who are completing their first year MSW curriculum in the part-time program or traditional two-year full time program. Interested students should meet with the MSW Field Placement Coordinator to obtain information for the PPC Traineeship.
The PPC Traineeship follows the UAB academic calendar. In (UAB) fall semester the student is enrolled in SWK680, Field Practicum II, and is at the PPC for 20 hours per week. Part of that time is devoted to interdisciplinary didactic class work, projects, presentations, and seminars, and part is an introduction to the role of the medical social worker in pediatrics. In (UAB) spring semester, the student is enrolled in SWK681, Field Education III, and spends 20 hours per week at the PPC. Interdisciplinary classes continue in spring, along with clinical work, projects, and presentations.
