Members of the critical care division help lead a team of clinicians comprised of pediatric intensivists, neonatologists, pediatric cardiologists, pediatric nurse practitioners, and 2 pediatric cardiac surgeons that manage neonatal to young adult patients in the busy 7 bed pediatric cardiac intensive care unit (CVICU) located within UAB Hospital.  This unit admitted over 400 patients last year.  The majority of patients are admitted for post-surgical management of congenital heart disease, including complex neonatal lesions such as hypoplastic left heart and transposition of the great arteries.  In addition, all other aspects of medical and surgical cardiac disease are managed in this unit, including heart transplantation, arrhythmias, myocarditis, valvular heart disease and severe heart failure that requires extracorporeal support modalities such as a ventricular assist device (Berlin heart) or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO).
Children's of Alabama has opened a 700,000 square-foot expansion facility that includes a state of the art 22 bed Pediatric Intensive Care Unit and a 20 bed CVICU.

The division has an active, accredited fellowship program
