Hospital Medicine 2018

Pediatric Hospital Medicine (PHM) faculty serve as attending physicians for the General Inpatient Service (GIPS) which covers 4,500 to 5,000 hospital admissions per year, roughly one-third of all patients admitted to Children’s of Alabama. Patients on GIPS are distributed among 5 teams during the busier months (August through May) and 4 teams in June and July when fewer patients require hospitalization. One team is staffed only by hospitalists from August through May, each of the other 4 teams include 3 resident physicians at least one of which is an intern, medical students and an attending physician. Attending physicians are hospitalists (3-4 teams) and General Pediatrics faculty (1 team). PHM also organizes in-house attending physician coverage for GIPS after-hours and on weekends.

In addition to the considerable effort committed to providing care to hospitalized children and contributing to the education of resident physicians and medical students, PHM faculty serve in a variety of roles supporting the goals of the hospital and the Department of Pediatrics, including medical staff committees, scheduling Grand Rounds speakers, overseeing and evaluating the medical student pediatric clerkship, and assisting resident physicians with quality improvement projects. PHM faculty and fellows have a number of active quality improvement and research projects including reducing patient ID band errors, reducing environmental tobacco smoke exposure in children, improving communication with the medical home at the time of hospital discharge, monitoring adherence to nationally accepted, evidence based guidelines applicable to inpatients, hospital acquired infections, simulation laboratory as a tool for medical education and research, use of administrative health care date to improve patient care, hospital acquired infections, clinical course of inpatients with croup and management of osteomyelitis.
