Curriculum for PGY-3 to PGY-5

After the conclusion of general pediatrics training during PGY-1 and PGY-2 years, 

PGY-3 (Adult Neurology Year)

  • Inpatient Adult Neurology Wards (3 months)

  • VA Neurology (1 month)

  • Outpatient UAB Neurology at Kirklin Clinic (2 months)

  • Inpatient Adult Neurology Consult Service (2 months)

  • Inpatient Vascular & Critical Care Neurology (Stroke) (1 month)

  • Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (2 months)

  • EEG elective (1 month)

  • Neuropathology (1 month)

*PGY-3 trainees have one half-day of adult neurology continuity clinic at the VA and one half-day of child neurology continuity clinic at Children’s of Alabama each week.

PGY-4 (Child Neurology)

  • Neuroradiology (1 month)

  • Outpatient general pediatric neurology clinic (3 months)

  • Inpatient child neurology consult service (6 months)

  • Outpatient electives (2 months)

*PGY-4 trainees continue to serve his or her patients one half-day per week in the child neurology continuity clinic.

PGY-5 (Child Neurology)

  • Outpatient general pediatric neurology clinic (3 months)

  • Neurophysiology (at least 1 month)

  • Child psychiatry (1 month)

  • Neuro-oncology (1 month)

  • Pre-tending month (1 month in late spring of PGY-5 year): PGY-5 functions as the attending on our inpatient child neurology consult service (w/ attending backup)

  • Electives/Research (4-5 months)

*PGY-5 trainees continue to serve his or her patients one half-day per week in child neurology continuity clinic.

*Popular electives include pediatric rehab medicine, genetics, pediatric rheumatology, pediatric neurosurgery, pediatric ophthalmology, pediatric palliative care, pediatric movement disorders, child neurology clinics at Children’s South, or additional neurophysiology months at UAB/COA to include more experience in EEG/EMG/NCS.
