work out

The UAB Pediatric Resident Wellness Committee was created by residents for residents! Driven by a hope to infuse wellness into the training environment.

Our Mission: To provide events and support to promote wellness among residents in all rotations at COA. Committee members will jointly organize small wellness events in the resident lounge or off-campus to promote healthy lifestyles and emotional support and cheer! Below are many of the things the Wellness Committee works to provide to increase resident wellness.

Also in the works: A longitudinal “Wellness Curriculum” built into certain rotations to prevent burn out. This curriculum will include learning points and reflection time on topics including fighting compassion fatigue, learning to grieve for a stranger, conducting meaningful goals of care discussions, guided meditation practices, and identifying burnout in peers.

Health Related Wellness

Free weekly fitness classes run from Fall to Spring of each academic year! We have received a grant to further this project with a wellness study and will include nutrition advice for residents. Wellness Walks (also free!) are held monthly from Spring to Fall to promote time spent outdoors.

We provide a quarterly Mindfulness Meeting with Chaplains, Therapists, or with COA’s Director of Emotional Wellness to help residents reflect individually and collectively on stressful moments in residency and how to cope with stress as well as reflect on what drives them to this vocation.

We provide fun events in the resident lounge with monthly Wellness Wednesdays! Examples include popcorn day, trail mix bar, hot cocoa day, make your own cupcake day, quarterly birthday party for residents, and Hand-in-Paw pet therapy.
