Our pediatric pulmonary training program provides residents with the knowledge, skills, and values necessary to provide comprehensive, family-centered care for pediatric patients with acute and chronic respiratory disorders and prepares residents to expand the knowledge base in this field through research. The program emphasizes normal pulmonary physiology in pediatric patients and correlation of pathophysiology with clinical disorders, including those that are life threatening. The training occurs within the context of a seasoned interdisciplinary team and has a strong track record of preparing both academic and community-based leaders in pediatric pulmonology. The overall goal of the pediatric pulmonary residency program is to train highly qualified physician scientists who will contribute substantially to this field through exemplary patient care, original research, teaching, and quality improvement. The residents will achieve this goal through the following objectives:

  • Proficiency in the clinical diagnosis and medical treatment of acute, chronic, and life-threatening respiratory disorders in infants, children, adolescents, and young adults
  • Proficiency in the selection, performance, and evaluation of procedures necessary for the morphologic and physiologic assessment of pulmonary diseases
  • Developing a comprehensive knowledge base of the pathophysiology of pediatric respiratory disorders and life-long learning skills through formal course work, self-study, lectures, and seminars offered as part of the training program
  • Acquiring effective skills in teaching, communication, and mentorship
  • Understanding the psychosocial aspects of respiratory diseases and developing skills in counseling, cultural competency, ethics, and professionalism
  • Developing the administrative skills necessary to operate a pediatric pulmonology facility including knowledge of staffing needs, unit management, program development, interdisciplinary team building, negotiation, advocacy, and grant writing
  • Acquiring the necessary research skills to design, conduct, evaluate, and publish original research through experience, mentoring, and formal coursework in research design, biostatistics, and epidemiology

Program Description:

Recognized by the American Board of Medical Subspecialties in 1984, pediatric pulmonology advances knowledge of acute and chronic respiratory diseases afflicting infants, children and adolescents. Pediatric pulmonology fellowship training focuses on clinical care, scholarly activity, and teaching as an advanced, three-year, subspecialty program beyond general pediatric or medicine-pediatric residency training. Candidates are eligible for the Pediatric Pulmonology Subboard Examination of the American Board of Pediatrics following successful completion of the program.

Clinical care is provided for children with a remarkable variety of lung diseases and breathing disorders, such as asthma, sleep-disordered breathing, apnea, central hypoventilation, cystic fibrosis, ciliopathies, bronchiectasis, interstitial lung diseases, bronchopulmonary dysplasia, bronchiolitis, pneumonia, chronic respiratory insufficiency, thoracic tumors, and congenital lung anomalies. Fellows have the opportunity to learn and perform bronchoscopic techniques, including bronchoalveolar lavage and biopsies, and gain understanding of pulmonary function studies, blood gas measurements, allergy testing, and overnight polysomnography. A significant portion of training consists of scholarly activity, during which fellows develop and hone skills necessary to be successful as effective subspecialists, advocates, clinical investigators, and pulmonary scientists.

Application Process and Requirements

Applicants will be solicited and accepted in the fall of each year through the ERAS.  The program director and the faculty will review applications and those applications deemed superior would be asked to come for an interview between January and April of each year. After interviews are completed the faculty meets to discuss all applicants and the decision is based on the opinion of the faculty. The program participates in the National Resident Matching Program for Pediatric Pulmonology fellows.
