The Spring Scramble 5K is the UAB Pediatric Residency Program’s annual community outreach opportunity to recognize and educate about very important health issues. We want all children to develop a healthy body and healthy mind! This is why we are excited and honored to help support Children’s of Alabama’s programs, LESTER (Let's Eat Smart, Then Exercise Right) and Reach Out and Read.
The LESTER program is unique to Children's of Alabama, created and taught by our registered dietitians, child life therapists, and occupational therapists. It is an 8-week program for children 6-11 years old to teach the whole family how to be healthier: Let's Eat Smart, Then Exercise Right!
Reach Out and Read is a national organization devoted to early literacy and school readiness for children by partnering with medical professionals. Our pediatrics residents participate in the program through the Primary Care Clinic, which provides patients with a book at each check-up from 6 months to 5 years old. The evidence-based program is endorsed by the American Academy of Pediatrics and stresses the importance of reading out loud with your child every day to help them be ready to learn when they enter kindergarten.
