SUPER-GM (formerly SURE-GM) is an 8-week summer program tailored for students from our partner historically black colleges and universities and other minority-serving institutions. All students are welcome to apply as well as students who have faced challenging social, economic, educational, cultural, or other life circumstances.
Upon completing the summer program, selected individuals will be invited to participate in an optional year-long postbaccalaureate experience for the following year. Scholars will be provided with the necessary skills, exposure, and experiences to succeed in graduate and/or professional training in genomic sciences, developed by The University of Alabama at Birmingham.
Training Program:

Foundational knowledge in genetics, genomics, and bioinformatics

Training in fundamental research skills

Personal assessment and discussion of qualitative and quantitative skills to be used as the basis for an individualized development plan

Mentorship by a PhD student or fellow (or PI in some cases) on a summer research project in the area of genetics and genomics

Poster presentation at UAB Research Expo on their summer research

Counseling and support in applying to graduate and/or professional school
Trainees will also participate in structured activities such as book and journal clubs, seminars, personal and professional development, and networking events while gaining increased awareness of the clinical applications of genomic information.
Eligibility:
This program is designed for scholars with a strong interest in pursuing graduate school (MD, PhD, and MD-PhD) and biomedical research.

- Rising seniors
- Graduate of STEM degree
- Minimum GPA of 3.0
- Be a U. S. Citizen, national, or permanent resident
