Dr. Kirksey is a graduate of the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. She completed her residency in Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Carolinas Rehabilitation in Charlotte, NC where she served as Chief Resident. Following residency, Dr. Kirksey joined the Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation Department at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. She is the current Residency Program Director and Medical Director of the Spinal Cord Injury inpatient program in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation

Dr. Kirksey is board certified by the American Board of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation. She has a special interest in the field of spinal cord injury and spinal disorders. She is very involved in direct patient care for spinal cord injured inpatients at UAB Hospital’s Spain Rehabilitation Center and The Kirklin Clinic’s outpatient spinal cord injury service. Her clinical interests include spinal cord injury and electromyography (EMG/NCS). Her primary research interests are in acute and chronic spinal cord injured patients. She has been an investigator for the UAB Spinal Cord Injury Model System for several years.

Associations in which Dr. Kirksey is active include the American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, the Association of Academic Physiatrists, Academy of Spinal Cord Injury Professionals, American Spinal Injury Association, Alabama Society of PMR and Mineral District Medical Society.
