Gary T. Barnes, Ph.D., DABR, FAAPM, FACR

Professor Emeritus, Division of Physics and Engineering

Dr. Barnes is the immediate past head of the Radiologic Physics Section and oversees the physics courses given for radiology residents. He teaches the popular 4-month series of board review sessions for Senior residents in addition to several sections of the main physics courses. (Most year's resident classes score at or above the 90th percentile nationwide.) His research interests include image optimization and dose reduction in mammography, stimulable phosphors, and scatter reduction. He also develops new approaches to dual-energy imaging and computed radiography of the chest. Dr. Barnes is a two-time recipient of the Radiology Teacher of the Year Award and is a past president of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.

The UAB Department of Radiology serves a pivotal and critical role in support of comprehensive patient care provided by the UAB Health System. 

Over 81 highly trained radiologists in every sub-specialty field form the foundation of diagnostic and therapeutic services are available to patients throughout the country. 


The UAB Department of Radiology has active research in clinical, translational and basic science disciplines. Our research includes external funding portfolios and collaborative research with UAB and regional investigators.


Our mission is to graduate well rounded, excellently trained radiologists capable of performing and interpreting a comprehensive range of radiologic procedures, who embrace the challenge of life-long learning in Radiology.

Patient Care

Our physicians and staff provide continuous support for our inpatient and outpatient facilities, including the state’s only ACS certified adult Level I trauma center.
