Michael J. Pitt, M.D., FACR

Retired Professor Emeritus, Musculoskeletal Imaging Section


Dr. Michael Pitt graduated from Jefferson Medical College in 1963, he went on to complete a radiology residency there. He spent the next 22 years with the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center, where he was Director and Chief of Bone and Joint Radiology from 1971-1993. Dr. Pitt joined the UAB Radiology faculty as Director of Musculoskeletal Imaging in 1993. In 2007, Dr. Pitt was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus by the University of Alabama Board of Trustees.

Dr. Pitt is an internationally recognized expert in musculoskeletal radiology and is a founding member of the International Skeletal Society. He has been recognized for excellence with a number of honors from academic and professional organizations, including Fellow in the American College of Radiology, Dean’s List for excellence in teaching of the clinical sciences at the University of Arizona, Grand Saguaro Award for Outstanding Teaching at the University of Arizona, Award for dedication in teaching Orthopaedic surgical residents at the University of Arizona, and listed in the “Best Doctors in America.” In 2007, Dr. Pitt received the International Skeletal Society’s Founder’s Medal, their most prestigious award given to those who have distinguished themselves through their outstanding dedication to the society and by excellence in their field of science.

Dr. Pitt's excellence and dedication to the instruction of residents in musculoskeletal radiology interpretation and procedural skills are regarded as a role model for residents and junior faculty.

He has presented numerous lectures at national and international meetings and held memberships in a number of professional and scholarly organizations.
