Gary T. Barnes, Ph.D., DABR, FAAPM, FACR

Retired Professor Emeritus, Division of Physics and Engineering


Dr. Barnes is the immediate past head of the Radiologic Physics Section and oversees the physics courses given for radiology residents. He teaches the popular 4-month series of board review sessions for Senior residents in addition to several sections of the main physics courses. (Most year's resident classes score at or above the 90th percentile nationwide.) His research interests include image optimization and dose reduction in mammography, stimulable phosphors, and scatter reduction. He also develops new approaches to dual-energy imaging and computed radiography of the chest. Dr. Barnes is a two-time recipient of the Radiology Teacher of the Year Award and is a past president of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine.
