The UAB Department of Surgery has one of the largest clinical transplant programs in the United States and has a significant research commitment to immunology and transplant research. With laboratories dedicated to innate immunity in non-lymphoid organs, xenotransplantation in large animal models, histocompatibility, and uterine transplantation, the department is actively involved in understanding mechanisms of inflammation after organ injury and improving outcomes in transplantation.
