UAB’s Graduate School to host Three-Minute Thesis finals March 7

Fifty-two students from Southern universities will compete in the Regional 3MT finals hosted by UAB’s Graduate School.

3MTJoomla52 students from Southern universities will compete in the Regional 3MT finals hosted by UAB’s Graduate School. The Conference for Southern Graduate Schools will host the Regional 3MT Competition on the University of Alabama at Birmingham’s campus Saturday, March 7.  

Developed by the University of Queensland in Brisbane, Australia, 3MT cultivates Ph.D. students’ academic, presentation and research communication skills. The competition supports their capacity to effectively explain their research in three minutes, in a language appropriate to a non-specialist audience.

There are currently 52 graduate students from universities that are members of the CSGS registered to compete in the regional competition, including University of Alabama in Huntsville, University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa, UAB, Texas Tech, University of South Florida, University of Kentucky, Louisiana State University, Mississippi State University, Auburn, University of Georgia, Texas A&M, Old Dominion University, James Madison, and more. 

There will be four semifinal rounds held Saturday morning with two sessions running concurrently from 9:45-11 a.m. and two sessions running concurrently from 11:15 a.m.-12:30 p.m. The finals competition will be held from 5-6 p.m. and will consist of the top two students from each of the four heats.

Heat 1 and Heat 3 will take place in the Hamilton II meeting room. Heat 2 and Heat 4 will take place in Cudworth Auditorium. The finals competition will happen in the ballrooms on the lower level of the Hilton at UAB.
