Join UAB’s Institute for Human Rights for a Facebook Live discussion on the civil rights history of Birmingham that explores the effects of racist policies both past and present.The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Institute for Human Rights will moderate a community discussion, “History of Birmingham,” at 4 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 10, on its Facebook page.
The discussion will focus on the civil rights history of Birmingham. Keynote speaker Pamela King — former assistant professor in UAB’s College of Arts and Sciences Department of History — will present the history of Birmingham, from the city’s founding through the civil rights era and up to recent history. The dialogue will explore the effects of racist policies both past and present.
Panelists will discuss the implications of emergency declarations for human rights and individual freedoms in light of the current pandemic.
The event will take place on Facebook at www.facebook.com/UABLHC/; community members are also invited to submit questions for her to lhc@uab.edu by Sept. 4.
