UAB Homecoming 2020, “Land of the Green & Gold,” is Sept. 27-Oct. 3

Compete in the yard sign decoration contest, look for clues in the Blazer Hustle Social Media Hunt, paint your own Blaze masterpiece, enjoy the traditional pancakes and karaoke, and tune in to the virtual parade.

HOCO20 2From Sept. 27-Oct. 3, the University of Alabama at Birmingham wants you to show off your skills and Blazer spirit in the “Land of the Green & Gold.”

UAB’s traditional Homecoming activities look different this year, but the Blazer spirit is stronger than ever. For 2020 Homecoming, you can compete in the yard sign decoration contest, show your Blazer spirit on campus and in the community, look for clues in the Blazer Hustle Social Media Hunt, and donate food and toiletries for those in need. Join the virtual fun and learn how to paint your own Blaze masterpiece, jump in your pajamas for pancakes and karaoke, and tune in to the parade on Instagram TV. Then get your tickets and watch the Blazers play the University of Texas at San Antonio at Legion Field, 11:30 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 3. Winners of the Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition will be announced at halftime. Visit www.uab.edu/homecoming for full event details. Use the hashtag #UABHomecoming.

Homecoming Yard Sign Decoration Competition

Get your UAB Homecoming ’20 yard sign from 3-6 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 24, through the National Alumni Society at Alumni House, 1301 10th Ave. South, and show your Blazer pride. Place the sign in your yard and tag @uabalumni and #uabhomecoming on social media. Share your love of the Green and Gold and decorate your sign, then submit your picture to enter the competition. All signs in the competition must be picked up during the Homecoming drive-thru; the judging will be Tuesday, Sept. 29.

Paint the Town

Paint the Town goes virtual. Check out the UAB Homecoming Instagram to see how fellow Blazers have displayed their Homecoming spirit with posters and banners. Interested in submitting a poster? Register to participate by noon Sept. 27. You can also sign up to submit a physical poster to be posted on campus. All participants will be entered into a drawing for Homecoming T-shirts and swag. Winners will be announced at 6 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 27.

In one of the great new traditions in all of college football, the Blazers will again honor Children’s Harbor on Homecoming by wearing the names of patients on the backs of the jerseys. 

Blazer Hustle Social Media Hunt

A fun, exploratory hunt around campus. For the Blazer Hustle Social Media Hunt, a new set of clues will be posted on the UAB Homecoming Instagram at 9 a.m. each day, Monday-Wednesday, Sept. 28-30, involving different areas of campus. Once locations are found, scan the QR code on the sign at each location and follow the directions. The first person to complete the full hunt by 6 p.m. will win a T-shirt and button.

Note: Teams that are participating in the Blazer Spirit Competition will follow the same clues and will receive points only for their team once completed.

Blazer Spirit Food and Toiletries Drive

Blazer Spirit Food and Toiletries Drive, donate two or more non-perishable food and toiletry items for Blazer Kitchen. Monday, Sept. 28, 11 a.m.-2 p.m. on the Campus Green.

Pancakes and Karaoke — now with more karaoke

Pancakes and Karaoke: Join in an evening of pancakes, karaoke and Blazer fun. This year, the entire UAB family is invited to participate this student tradition, 4:30-7 p.m. Tuesday, Sept. 29. Students can pick up pancakes at the Commons; the first 100 students to RSVP will receive a free pancake dinner. All others, BYOP. Tune in to the UAB Homecoming Instagram Live at 6 p.m. for karaoke with your favorite Blazers. Interested in singing your favorite song live? Click here to sign up to participate. Karaoke participants will be entered into a drawing to win Homecoming T-shirts and buttons.

Paint your own Blaze masterpiece

Create a painting of Blaze at Painting with the Provost, 7 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 1, led by UAB Provost Pamela Benoit. For this interactive webinar, register and gather this short list of supplies, then log onto Zoom for an artistic journey as you paint your own display-worthy Blaze.

Virtual Homecoming Parade

The annual spirit-filled parade goes virtual for 2020. Celebrate with your UAB family and gather together on UAB Homecoming Instagram to watch the Virtual Homecoming Parade, featuring the Marching Blazers, spirit teams, photos, videos and more. Tune in to share the Blazer spirit at noon Friday, Oct. 2. Use the hashtag #UABHomecoming.

HOCO20 3Homecoming Game: UAB Football vs. UTSA

In one of the great new traditions in all of college football, the Blazers will once again honor Children’s Harbor on Homecoming by wearing their alternative gray and lime uniforms with the names of patients on the backs of the jerseys. Saturday, Oct. 3, at 11:30 a.m., at Birmingham’s Legion Field. Tickets are $20.

Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition

The Mr. and Ms. UAB Scholarship Competition is one of UAB’s longest-standing Homecoming traditions and is presented by the National Alumni Society. The winners each receive $2,500 scholarships and serve as ambassadors of UAB and on the Student Alumni Society Leadership Council in the coming year. The first alternates each receive $1,000 scholarships. This year the entire process will be virtual. The 10 finalists are selected through an interview process, and the winners are chosen through an additional round of interviews and a student vote, held during Homecoming Week. The winners will be announced at halftime.
