play camp.2In-person summer camps in musical theater and visual arts will be presented by ArtPlay at the University of Alabama at Birmingham this summer.

Three musical theater and two visual arts camps for children ages 7-14 and 10-18 for summer 2021 are accepting registrations now. See a list of classes and register at AlysStephens.org.

All camps will be registered with UAB’s Youth Protection program and ArtPlay is preparing for many scenarios; the protocols UAB and the UA System put into place for in-person summer camps are based on the current environment and are subject to change. These may include:

  • Daily temperature checks
  • Staggered pickup/drop-off
  • Masking
  • Current social distancing guidelines
  • Small group classes
  • Outdoor performances/art galleries

ArtPlay Musical Theatre camps

  • Camp 1, for ages 7-14, with director Jennifer Salvant. From 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday June 7-18. Cost is $420; class capacity is 40.
  • Camp 2, for ages 7-14, with director Valerie Lemmons. From 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday June 21-July 2. Cost is $420; class capacity is 40.
  • Camp 3 Intensive, for ages 10-18, with director Reid Watson. From 9 a.m.-3:30 p.m. Monday-Friday July 12-30. Cost is $580; class capacity is 40.

ArtPlay Musical Theatre campers will be introduced to musical theater with a variety of fun classes. They will learn theater games, improvisation, warm-ups, dance, vocal exercises, voice and diction, terminology, acting, and stage production, all while developing a character and rehearsing for a full staged musical production at the end of camp. Older campers in the third camp will have an extra week for master classes — a week of intensive classes in improv, musical theater dance, voice, character development, acting and auditioning.

ArtPlay Visual Arts camps

ArtPlay’s award-winning visual arts camps offer classes in drawing, painting, sculpture, crafts and more. Each day offers a new discovery, and at the end of camp students will have their very own art show. Two sessions are planned.

  • ArtPlay Visual Arts Camp A, ages 7-12, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday June 28-July 2. Cost is $300; class capacity is 20.
  • ArtPlay Visual Arts Camp B, ages 7-12, from 9 a.m.-3 p.m. Monday-Friday July 19-23. Cost is $300; class capacity is 20.

ArtPlay looks forward to having students back in the buildings safely, says Director Heath Mixon.

“Your kids will get an amazing art education experience,” Mixon said. “They will be around friends, old and new. They will be with their favorite teaching artists and counselors. They will have fun and make memories that will last a lifetime.”
