The virtual event will be at 5 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 22. Smith will discuss the brutal history of the slave trade and how it has made a lasting impact to this day, whether it is in places we might drive by on our way to work or holidays such as Juneteenth.

Smith is a host of the YouTube series “Crash Course Black American History” and author of the recently released No. 1 New York Times bestseller “How the Word Is Passed: A Reckoning With the History of Slavery Across America.”

The Cultural Lens: Film and Speaker Series introduces films, scholars, authors, artists and activists to campus to address various topics and how those topics are being defined and portrayed through the media. Using these illustrations, the series aims to explore and drive discussion, while addressing legitimized myths and barriers along the road to finding common ground.

The event is free and open to the public. Registration is required; register online.
