Alys Stephens Center presents free lunchtime Global Fest events Nov. 6-8

All are invited to the hour-long, free lectures and demonstrations of Irish dance, Indian dance and French language and culture, at noon each day in the ASC.
global fest 2The University of Alabama at Birmingham’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center will present Global Fest, a free celebration of world cultures, Nov. 6-8.

The hourlong, free events, held at noon each day in the ASC, were inspired by Birmingham’s locally based international artists and touring artists who are based internationally. Everyone is invited. Wednesday, Nov. 6
Global Fest: The Jig Is Up! The Masterful Artistry of Irish Dance
, noon, UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. Explore Irish dance with the members of Birmingham’s Traditional Irish Academy in an afternoon of movement and discussion. Topics include the history and costuming of Irish dance, use of Gaelic language and more.

Thursday, Nov. 7
Global Fest: The Art of Indian Dances
, noon, UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. The event will feature Pia Sen, Ph.D., founder and director of Notinee Indian Dance, and Sheila Rubin, founder and director of Natyananda Dance of India, both in Birmingham. Learn about the beauty and intricacy of Indian dance with a combination lecture/demonstration. From each hand gesture to the vivid color of a costume, each element plays an integral role in this art form that tells stories through dance.

Friday, Nov. 8
Global Fest: Un Voyage En Frances
, noon, UAB’s Alys Stephens Center, 1200 10th Ave. South. The event will feature Associate Professor Catherine Danielou, Ph.D., and instructor Margaret Bond of the UAB Department of Foreign Languages and Literatures. Take a trip to France for a French language mini-lesson and discussion on French food, wine and culture. Guests may sample French cheeses and pastries from local shops and restaurants.

Shuttle service will be provided by UAB between the hours of 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. each day to transport UAB employees to the events. This is a special Global Fest route provided by UAB Parking and Transportation Service. Pickup points include the UAB Recreation Center, Fourth Avenue Parking Deck and Administration Building.
