Anne Fausto-Sterling, Ph.D.The University of Alabama at Birmingham College of Arts and Sciences welcomes the 2019 Ireland Distinguished Scholar, Anne Fausto-Sterling, Ph.D., on Monday, April 8, for her lecture “Gender/Sex, Sexual Orientation and Identity are in the body. How did they get there?”
The event will be at 4 p.m. in the Reynolds-Kirschbaum Recital Hall at the Alys Stephens Center. It is free and open to the public.
Fausto-Sterling, a leader in the field of biology and gender development, is the Nancy Duke Lewis professor emerita of biology and gender studies at Brown University, where she is also the founder and former director of the Science and Technology Studies program.
Her research in the field of biology and gender development explores gender, sexuality, race and technology with a focus on dynamic systems theory. A fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, Fausto-Sterling has appeared in a variety of media outlets, such as The New York Times, the Huffington Post and PBS.
“The College of Arts and Sciences is very fortunate to have Dr. Fausto-Sterling as this year’s Ireland Visiting Scholar,” said Robert Palazzo, Ph.D., dean of the College of Arts and Sciences. “Her work provides a broad perspective on the concept of gender, from its biological basis to the social interpretation of gender identity and how it has impacted our laws and institutions.”
