Sustainability2Corporations will discuss sustainability and different avenues to work closer together moving forward. The University of Alabama at Birmingham will host the inaugural Sustainability Leadership Summit on Wednesday, July 10, from 9 a.m.-3:15 p.m. at the Nielsen Innovation Lab in UAB’s Collat School of Business, located at 710 13th St. S., Birmingham, AL 35233.

Sponsored by UAB Sustainability and the Collat School of Business, the summit will provide a unique opportunity for sustainability practitioners at leading companies with significant operations in Birmingham to discuss successes and barriers to meeting their sustainability targets.

This is the first time the business community has come together to discuss and share their ideas and find a way to work together on sustainability efforts.

“We are excited to host UAB’s first corporate sustainability leadership summit,” said Julie Price, Ph.D., manager for UAB Sustainability. “The future of our region’s environmental, economic and social sustainability depends on the commitment of area companies to work together to provide innovative and cost-efficient solutions.”

Corporate attendees include Milo’s, Regions, Brasfield & Gorrie, Royal Cup, Securitas, The World Games, EBSCO, City of Birmingham, Coca-Cola Bottling Company United, Publix, and UAB. The event will be facilitated by Leadership Birmingham.

Erin Meezan, VP and chief sustainability officer at Interface, will deliver the opening remarks, which is an open event; the remainder of the day is closed to the public. The 2014 Sustainability Leaders Report ranked Interface third among companies leading the way on sustainability — right after Patagonia.

The corporate attendees will engage on a variety of topics, including:

  • Waste Diversion
  • Supply Chain/Purchasing
  • Energy and Water
  • Staff Engagement in Sustainability
