UAB student investors won a national award with their Green & Gold Fund.

UAB’s Green and Gold Fund won the 2012 Alternative Investment Style national championship at this week’s R.I.S.E. XII Forum. This marks back-to-back national titles for the student-managed investment portfolio. The R.I.S.E. Forum is the largest national collegiate portfolio competition in the country.

RISEThe fund is valued at approximately $525,000 – surpassing their goal of $500,000 – and has outperformed the Standard & Poor 500.

The UAB Green and Gold Fund is run by UAB students operating out of the UAB Collat School of Business Bloomberg Terminal Room. The newly created space features 20 Bloomberg terminals, the same used by financial professionals, to monitor and analyze real-time financial market data and place trades electronically. The UAB Green and Gold Fund holdings include Apple, Google and Amazon.

The UAB national championship team is advised by Jacob Gelber, instructor in the School of Business, and the student leaders are:

  • Daniel Phillips, chief investment officer

  • Lou Jackson, portfolio manager
  • Daniel Wilson, portfolio manager, former chief investment officer
  • Corey Lovelace, portfolio manager
  • Joshua Phillips, analyst

The UAB Green and Gold Fund also took second place in the Balanced Portfolio category. The team won first place in the undergraduate Growth Style Category at the 2008 R.I.S.E. Forum and have been featured on CNBC and in Bloomberg Business Week in the past.
