Amanda Whitaker of Morris named Miss UAB 2013

Dentistry student was crowned Oct. 31 and won $2,200 in scholarship money.

miss_uab_2013_s2Amanda Whitaker of Morris was crowned Miss UAB 2013 at the Miss UAB Scholarship Pageant held Oct. 31, 2012, at UAB’s Alys Stephens Performing Arts Center.

Whitaker, who competed against 17 other contestants, won a $2,000 scholarship. She also won the fitness and lifestyle category, with a $100 scholarship. She is a graduate student in the UAB School of Dentistry, and is the daughter of Stephen and Virginia Whitaker.

Callie Boyd of Birmingham was named first alternate and won a $750 scholarship. Boyd, a senior majoring in nursing, is the daughter of John and Cindy Boyd.

Whitaker and Boyd tied in the talent category; they each won a $100 scholarship. Boyd performed “Nostradamus” on piano; Whitaker performed lyrical dance to “Only Hope.”

Haylie Reed of Huntsville, a junior majoring in biomedical engineering, was named second alternate and won a $650 scholarship. She is the daughter of Joey and Cynthia Reed.

Mattie Boyd of Homewood, a freshman majoring in education, was named third alternate and won a $550 scholarship. She also is the daughter of John and Cindy Boyd.

Hannah Pearcy of Fort Payne, a sophomore majoring in criminal justice, was named fourth alternate and won a $350 scholarship. She is the daughter of Rick and Stacy Pearcy.

The winners received flowers, a glass plaque and Artistry Skincare & Cosmetics products and gift baskets, sponsored by Birmingham Business Builders.
